AFRICAN DIGITAL ASSET REGULATION • STAGE 3

African Regulation • Lesson 5 of 6

🌍 African regulatory comparison

Compare regulatory approaches without treating Africa as one legal jurisdiction.

Educational status • 21 October 2026: Regulatory requirements are jurisdiction- and activity-specific. Verify current primary documents before relying on any statement.

Do not generalise

There is no continent-wide crypto licence. Countries differ in definitions, financial-services supervision, AML/CFT obligations, payments treatment and enforcement.

Three examples

Zimbabwe: verify activity-specific rules with RBZ and other competent authorities; do not assume proposals are law. South Africa: FSCA regulates relevant crypto-asset financial services under FAIS. Mauritius: FSC administers a dedicated virtual-asset services statute.

Comparison checklist

For each jurisdiction, record the primary legal text, regulator, activity covered, licensing position, effective date, latest update, consumer safeguards and official verification link.

What this does not show

Different approaches do not imply one country is more investment-friendly or that a service can legally operate across borders without local authorisation.

Official sources and verification

Consult the regulator's latest publications, legal texts and licensing records. Links below are starting points, not evidence that any particular provider is authorised.
