African Regulation • Lesson 1 of 6
🇿🇼 Zimbabwe: regulation and regulatory status
Zimbabwean institutions, payments and cautious interpretation of public guidance.
Status and scope
Zimbabwe’s legal treatment of crypto-assets must be assessed by activity: holding, exchanging, advertising, payments, remittances and offering services may raise different questions. A regulatory consultation, sandbox announcement or policy proposal is not the same as a law or an authorisation.
Institutions to check
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is an essential source for payment systems, currency and exchange-control information. Other applicable obligations may involve financial intelligence, tax, consumer protection and data protection authorities.
Practical scenario
A Harare merchant considering digital-asset payments should first confirm the current legal treatment of the proposed payment method, foreign-exchange implications, customer disclosures and record-keeping duties. Do not infer approval from a wallet app or an exchange listing.
Evidence boundary
This lesson does not assert that cryptocurrency is legal tender, that a particular exchange is licensed, or that a general-purpose virtual-asset licence exists. Check the latest dated primary documents before taking action.
Official sources and verification
Consult the regulator's latest publications, legal texts and licensing records. Links below are starting points, not evidence that any particular provider is authorised.
