Understanding EU MiCA

Legal status: EU Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 is in application; requirements and transitional arrangements depend on activity and member state.

Reviewed: 21 October 2026 • Language: English (additional translations planned)

What is MiCA?

Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) is the European Union framework for specified crypto-asset issuers and crypto-asset service providers not otherwise regulated by existing EU financial-services law.

What areas does it cover?

It includes rules for asset-referenced tokens, e-money tokens, other covered crypto-assets, authorization and conduct of crypto-asset service providers, disclosures and market-abuse safeguards.

Why status checks matter

Regulatory technical standards, supervisory guidance and national transitional arrangements can change how requirements apply. The European Commission launched a review consultation in 2026.

Implications for African businesses

A business serving EU customers may need to assess MiCA and other applicable EU rules even if established in Africa. Seek jurisdiction-specific professional advice before offering regulated services.
